What is DRC Suspension?

What is DRC Suspension – And Why It’s Important to Service It Properly?

If you own a high-performance Audi RS model—like the RS4, RS6, or RS7—you might already be familiar with the term DRC Suspension, but many drivers don’t fully understand what it is or how it works. At North East Auto Tech, we not only understand DRC systems inside and out—we also have the specialist equipment needed to service them properly.

So, let’s break down what DRC suspension is, how it benefits your car, and why you should trust a garage like ours to work on it.

What is DRC Suspension?

DRC stands for Dynamic Ride Control, a high-performance, mechanical-hydraulic suspension system developed by Audi. It’s designed to improve both ride comfort and cornering performance—without relying on electronic controls or air suspension.

Instead of using electronic dampers, DRC connects the diagonally opposite shock absorbers (e.g. front-left to rear-right) using hydraulic lines and a central valve system. When your car corners, accelerates, or brakes, the system automatically transfers hydraulic pressure to counteract body movement—resulting in a flatter, more composed ride.

Benefits of DRC Suspension

  • Reduces body roll when cornering

  • Minimises nose dive under braking

  • Limits rear squat under hard acceleration

  • Delivers immediate, natural response with no electronic delay

  • Improves high-speed stability and road feel

In short, it keeps your Audi RS feeling tight, responsive, and controlled—just like it was engineered to.

Why Servicing DRC Requires Specialist Equipment

While DRC is brilliant when it’s working properly, it’s also a closed hydraulic system, which means it requires precise pressure balancing and careful handling when any component is replaced or serviced.

If the system is not refilled and bled correctly, it can lead to:

  • Uneven handling

  • Poor ride quality

  • Hydraulic leaks

  • Long-term damage to the system

North East Auto Tech – Fully Equipped for DRC Servicing

At North East Auto Tech, we’ve invested in the DRC filling and bleeding equipment, which allows us to:

  • Correctly fill and pressurise the system

  • Balance pressure across all four corners

  • Bleed the system to remove air and ensure performance

  • Diagnose any DRC-related faults or leaks

Whether you’re replacing a damper, dealing with a leak, or just want peace of mind that your RS is performing at its best, we’re fully equipped to handle it.

Audi RS4

  • B7 RS4 (2006–2008) – Standard DRC

  • B8 RS4 (2012–2015) – Optional DRC with Sport Package

  • B9 RS4 (2018–present) – Optional DRC (in some markets)

Audi RS5

  • B8 RS5 (2010–2015) – Optional DRC with Dynamic Package

  • B9 RS5 (2017–present) – Optional DRC (in higher trims or with dynamic ride options)

Audi RS6

  • C5 RS6 (2002–2004) – Standard DRC (early version, known for issues)

  • C6 RS6 (2008–2010) – Improved DRC system, standard

  • C7 RS6 (2013–2018) – Optional DRC with Dynamic Ride Package

  • C8 RS6 (2020–present) – Optional DRC with Dynamic Ride Control Package

Audi RS7

  • C7 RS7 (2013–2018) – Optional DRC with Dynamic Package

  • C8 RS7 (2020–present) – Optional DRC with Dynamic Ride Control Package

Audi R8

  • First-gen R8 V10 models (2009–2015) – Some used a similar hydraulic damping system, but it’s not DRC per se.

Note: The R8 does not use traditional DRC but may feature Magnetic Ride or other adaptive systems.

Vehicles That Do Not Use DRC

  • Volkswagen: GTI, R, Touareg – use adaptive electronic dampers (DCC), not DRC.

  • Skoda / SEAT / CUPRA: Use DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) on performance models.

  • Porsche: Uses PASM or PDCC, not DRC.

  • Audi S models: Typically use adaptive air suspension or electronically controlled dampers, not DRC.

How to Tell if Your Audi Has DRC:

  • Look for “DRC” or “Dynamic Ride Control” in the vehicle’s spec sheet or options list.

  • If in doubt, check for hydraulic lines running between shock absorbers (not typical in standard or electronically damped setups).

  • Some cars show a “Dynamic Ride Control” menu in the MMI system, depending on year and trim.
